EU Orders Review of Cooperation Agreement in Response to Israel's Expansion of Military Actions in Gaza

After an 11-week blockade, Israel agreed on the 20th to allow 93 trucks loaded with flour, baby oil, and medical supplies into Gaza; however, the United Nations reported that no supplies were actually distributed. UN humanitarian affairs chief Fletcher emphasized that if aid is not obtained within the next 48 hours, approximately 14,000 infants in Gaza could face death.

On the 20th, the EU announced that it would review agreements with Israel due to alleged human rights violations in Gaza. That same day, the UK also announced it was suspending trade negotiations with Israel and summoned the Israeli ambassador to express its stance. UK Prime Minister Sunak stated, "Firstly, members, I want to discuss the horrific situation in Gaza, where innocent children are once again bombed; this is utterly intolerable."

UK Foreign Secretary Cleverly said, "We will reassess our cooperation with Israel based on the 2030 bilateral roadmap." On the 19th, France, the UK, and Canada issued a joint statement strongly opposing Israel's military escalation in Gaza and any expansion of settlements in the West Bank, with the UK deciding to impose sanctions on Israeli settlement actions.

Additionally, Australian human rights groups called on their government on the 21st to impose sanctions on Israel. French Foreign Minister Colonna stated on the 20th that France is determined to recognize the Palestinian state, potentially announcing it at the upcoming UN meeting in June, which would make it the first European country to do so. However, Israeli airstrikes did not stop, with over 20 people killed on the 21st.

Israeli opposition leader criticized the Netanyahu government on the 20th, stating it has lost its rationality and takes pleasure in slaughtering infants. Israeli Democratic Party leader Golan pointed out, "Our mission is to ensure that we remain a rational country, not to engage in the slaughter of infants, treating it as a hobby or policy." This situation is further complicated by new intelligence indicating that even as President Trump negotiates nuclear issues with Iran, Israel may be preparing to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, which has also caused international oil prices to rise.
