Vice President Hsiao Mei-Chin's Visit to Czech Republic Targeted by Chinese Scheme, Criticized by Czech Speaker

President-elect Hsiao Mei-Chin visited the Czech Republic in March 2024, where Czech Senate Speaker Miloš Vystrčil shared a photo on X platform. He highlighted the ongoing tensions in cross-strait relations, questioning the safety of our country's vice-presidential candidates during overseas trips. According to reports from Mirror Weekly, during her three-day visit starting March 18, the Chinese embassy staff in Prague attempted to tailgate and crash into Hsiao's vehicle. The Czech Foreign Ministry subsequently summoned the Chinese ambassador to express concern, but no further actions were taken.

Speaker Vystrčil condemned the incident, stating, “This is very inappropriate behavior, and I find it unacceptable.” This visit marked Hsiao's first overseas trip after her victory in last year's presidential election, during which she met with Senate leadership. The report also mentioned that a Chinese diplomat ran a red light during Hsiao's visit, nearly causing a traffic accident, which was deemed not coincidental as Hsiao's convoy was passing through the city center of Prague.

Reports indicated that this action was planned and was a part of a Chinese intelligence operation. Additionally, Czech radio reported on an investigation into the incident, suggesting that there were even plans to impose physical contact and intimidation on Hsiao, shocking both Czech and European societies. Following the incident, the Czech Foreign Ministry summoned the Chinese ambassador to express concern but did not expel any embassy personnel. Vystrčil criticized the act further, stating, “This is very inappropriate behavior, and I find it unacceptable. We should respond as a sovereign and confident nation, but this falls under the authority of the Foreign Ministry, which must consider it carefully. We must recognize that we live in a world that is more dangerous than ever.”
