US Treasury Secretary Hints at Extension of Tariff Deadline to September 1 for Trade Talks with 10-12 Countries

US Treasury Secretary Steven Besant indicated that the tariff deadline originally set for July 8 may be extended to September 1. The US is actively pushing for negotiations with 18 major trading partners, aiming to reach agreements with 10 to 12 countries by September 1.
Back in April, the Trump administration announced its 'equal tariff' policy, establishing a 90-day grace period to negotiate trade agreements and avoid full imposition of tariffs. However, with less than two weeks remaining until the initial deadline, negotiations with most trading partners have not progressed as expected, creating tight time pressure.
In a recent interview, Secretary Besant signaled the possibility of extending the negotiation deadline to September 1, showing flexibility in Washington's trade negotiation strategy to provide more time to reach consensus and avoid escalating trade disputes. However, he emphasized that the ultimate decision rests with President Trump.
