EU Follows US Lead in Lifting Economic Sanctions on Syria

Reporter Pan Ji-Jia reports that the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, confirmed on the 20th that they will follow the US measures to lift economic sanctions on Syria and assist in the country's post-war reconstruction. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad expressed gratitude for the international community's support and praised the historical significance of this move.

After a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels, Borrell confirmed the news via the social media platform 'X', expressing hope to contribute to building a 'new, inclusive, and peaceful Syria'. This follows US President Trump's announcement on the 13th in Saudi Arabia to lift sanctions on Syria, marking another step by the international community to help Syria get back on track. Mekdad emphasized that this will give the Syrian people the opportunity to rebuild their homes.

The EU will unfreeze the assets of the Syrian central bank, allowing it to re-enter the global financial system. However, due to previous attacks on the 'Alawite' minority, sanctions will remain in place against individuals inciting ethnic tensions, while sanctions against the Assad regime and a ban on the sale of potentially suppressive military equipment will be maintained.

Reports indicate that the EU imposed sanctions on Syria's transport, energy, and banking sectors from 2012 to 2013. Following the collapse of the Assad regime in December last year, the EU approved assistance to Syria's critical economic and energy sectors at the end of February, while still keeping restrictions on the financial and banking sectors.
