Trump Proposes 50% Tariff on EU, Calls it 'Difficult to Handle'

U.S. President Donald Trump recently criticized the European Union on social media for taking advantage of the U.S. in trade, proposing a 50% tariff on EU products starting June 1, 2025. He pointed out that the EU's trade barriers and tax policies result in the U.S. facing over $250 million in trade deficits annually, which he deemed unacceptable.
According to Trump, products made in the U.S. would be exempt from these tariffs. This proposal has attracted market attention, with European stock indices dropping over 2%. Additionally, the White House is engaged in negotiations on trade matters with multiple countries, but progress has been inconsistent.
As for Trump's proposal, the European Commission has refrained from commenting and will wait for a scheduled call with the U.S. trade representative. Reports indicate that the U.S. is dissatisfied with the EU's proposal for mutual tariff reductions and hopes to include digital services taxes in the negotiations, which were not reflected in the EU's explanatory documents, leading to disappointment on the U.S. side.
