Tri-Nation Friendship Dinner in Tokyo: Paraguayan President Discusses Taiwan with Japanese Prime Minister

Paraguayan President Benítez expressed gratitude to Taiwan in Taiwanese, which prompted thunderous applause at the event. His visit to Japan marks him as the only head of state from a nation in South America that maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan, attending a tri-nation friendship dinner. The event showcased traditional Paraguayan instruments along with Taiwanese performances, and featured local delicacies like braised pork rice and Paraguayan corn cakes to foster closer ties.

President Benítez emphasized that while Taiwan and Japan have different histories, their principles are completely aligned with those of Paraguay. During his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida the previous day, he discussed the importance of Taiwan. He highlighted that supporting Taiwan's independence is crucial due to threats to their own survival, calling on other nations to take similar actions.

Japanese officials, including Justice Minister Suzuki and 37 members of parliament, attended, demonstrating their commitment to the trilateral relationship. Minister Suzuki stated that the improved relationships among Japan, Taiwan, and Paraguay are significant for maintaining a free and open East Asia without forceful changes to the status quo.

Representative Li Yiyang expressed gratitude on behalf of President Lai Ching-te to President Benítez for his strong support of Taiwan, especially in voicing its positions in the United Nations. As Taiwan faces challenges in the international community, the progression of bilateral cooperation into a trilateral friendship could create a ripple effect that might break through diplomatic hurdles.
