Italian Nun Zhao Xiurong Passes Away at 93 After Devoting Over 60 Years to Taiwan

Italian nun Zhao Xiurong passed away on May 30 at the age of 93. She devoted over 60 years of her life to Taiwan after arriving at the age of 29, particularly serving in the indigenous regions of Hsinchu County, where she became known affectionately as "Aunt Zhao."
On Mother's Day this year, she attended a celebration organized by the Hsinchu Science Park Management Association and the alumni association of National Chiao Tung University. However, two weeks later, she was reported to be unable to eat and passed away. Zhao Xiurong worked in Taiwan for more than half a century, fluent in Mandarin, Taiwanese Hokkien, and Hakka, fully immersing herself in the local community and even founding a daycare to support disadvantaged children with education.
In 2017, after learning of her wish to become a Taiwanese citizen, supporters helped her obtain an ID. Her memorial service will be held on May 31 at the Catholic Jesus Crucified Sisters' provincial headquarters in Hsinchu City.
