Mexico Holds Historic Judicial Elections with Drug Lord's Lawyer and Former Trafficker Running

Mexico is conducting its judicial elections today (June 1), featuring candidates like Sylvia Delgado, a lawyer who previously defended drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, and Leopoldo Chavez, a former trafficker arrested for methamphetamine smuggling. This election marks Mexico's first election for judges at various levels, drawing international attention due to the candidates' backgrounds.
According to Reuters, approximately 5,000 candidates are vying for more than 840 federal positions, including all Supreme Court justices and judges at various levels. The idea of electing judges was proposed by former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and is supported by current President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Despite concerns from some legislators and human rights organizations about the potential increase in organized crime's influence over the judicial system, the elections are proceeding. About 20 candidates have ties to criminal and corruption allegations, with Delgado particularly noteworthy as she aims to run for a criminal court judge position in Chihuahua.
Delgado has stated that defending Guzman propelled her legal career, emphasizing her integrity as a lawyer and her commitment to defending the rights of the people.
