China's Shangri-La Dialogue Delegation Downgraded Amid Ongoing PLA Anti-Corruption Campaign

This year's Shangri-La Dialogue saw a significant downgrade in the Chinese delegation, led by Major General Hu Gangfeng of the National Defense University, raising speculation about the impact of an ongoing internal purge within the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
The absence of Defense Minister Dong Jun not only resulted in a less elevated discourse but also left the Chinese delegation relatively silent during the discussions, a departure from previous engagements. Local scholars note this reflects the repercussions of the PLA's anti-corruption drive and has left many international representatives disappointed.
Hu responded strongly to remarks from U.S. officials during group discussions; however, unlike in prior years, he did not conduct a press conference to elaborate on China's positions. Experts suggest that this arrangement limits China's opportunities to assert its narrative on regional security, presenting difficulties for smaller nations aiming to counter U.S. claims.
