US Treasury Secretary: Trump Expected to Soon Phone Xi Jinping to Discuss Tariffs and Rare Earth Issues

Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the 'Victory Day' concert hosted by Russia on May 8. In an interview on Sunday (May 1), US Treasury Secretary Mnuchin stated that President Trump is expected to soon speak with Xi Jinping.
Since taking office on January 20, Trump has launched a large-scale trade war and has repeatedly indicated that Xi wants to talk to him. However, public information suggests that Xi has never called Trump regarding trade issues. During an interview with CBS on Sunday, Mnuchin was asked whether a call between Trump and Xi was scheduled. He replied, "I believe we will see some progress soon."
On Friday (May 30), Trump accused China of violating agreements with the US by failing to remove tariffs and trade restrictions on key minerals. Mnuchin remarked, "China's current actions are to withhold products crucial to India's and Europe's industrial supply chains. This is not the behavior of a reliable partner." He added, "I am confident that once President Trump speaks with Chairman Xi, this matter will be resolved. However, they are currently withholding some products that were promised to be released in the agreement. This may be an issue related to the Chinese system or may be intentional. We need to wait for the president to talk with Chairman Xi to confirm." Trump indicated he believes he will speak with Xi soon. China's side, on the other hand, noted in April that the two leaders had not had dialogue recently.
