Polish Presidential Election Runoff: Nawrózki Takes a Surprising Lead

Challenging for the presidency, the right-wing Law and Justice Party candidate Nawrózki waved to supporters, showing confidence despite trailing slightly in the first round of exit polls to the ruling party's pro-European candidate, Sozaśkowski. He encouraged his backers, stating, "Dear everyone, do not lose hope tonight, we will win this election; the gap is very small!"
The second round of the Polish presidential election took place on the 1st, where Sozaśkowski, representing the ruling centrist Civic Coalition and the Mayor of Warsaw, prematurely declared victory upon learning of the exit poll results. This declaration thrilled supporters, who believed the election results upheld democratic values. However, the counting results took a surprising turn as both candidates' vote shares remained closely contested.
Law and Justice Party member Kantak emphasized their predictions showed a very close result, asserting, "I feel we will win; I fully believe we will!"
42-year-old Nawrózki, a historian and amateur boxer, gained support from U.S. President Donald Trump before the election. He promises to prioritize Polish citizens in his policies, while supporting Ukraine but opposing Poland joining NATO to avoid provoking Russia, and prefers a certain distance from the EU.
This election outcome is seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Tusk's governance, providing a significant morale boost for the opposition Law and Justice Party as they prepare for the 2027 parliamentary elections.
