NVIDIA and Dell Unveil Next-Generation Supercomputer Doudna for the U.S. Department of Energy

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang attended the launch of the Doudna supercomputer, developed for the U.S. Department of Energy. The system, equipped with the upcoming Vera Rubin AI chip from NVIDIA, is manufactured by Dell and is set to go live next year.

Doudna will support AI and simulation computing as well as develop quantum algorithms, with Huang referring to it as a 'time machine' for science, compressing years of research into mere days.

Officially revealed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, the system is named after Nobel laureate and CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna. The U.S. Department of Energy states that Doudna is specifically designed to meet the immediate exploration needs of its most critical scientific missions.

Sudip Dosanjh, director of the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), emphasized that Doudna will accelerate a wide range of scientific workflows, seamlessly transmitting data from across the nation for near-real-time analysis.

The expected scientific outcomes from Doudna are projected to exceed those of the previous system, Perlmutter, by more than tenfold while consuming only two to three times the energy, representing an improvement of energy efficiency by three to five times per watt.
