China's Imported Star Anise Found Containing Sudan Red and Pesticides Raises Concerns Among Vendors

This week, the border inspection's non-compliance list revealed that two batches of Chinese-imported star anise were found to be non-compliant, with one batch testing positive for Sudan Red 1 and another containing pesticide residues. Star anise is commonly used in the making of braised dishes, and with the majority of star anise in Taiwan being imported, public safety concerns have arisen.
The food and drug administration (FDA) has updated its non-compliance list and emphasized that only star anise that passes 100% inspection can be imported into Taiwan. Many braised dish vendors rely on wholesalers for supply and are not overly concerned about the quality, as they possess the necessary inspection reports.
However, following this incident, vendors are urged to re-examine their supply chains and the origins of their ingredients to ensure consumer health and safety. Lin Jinfu, Deputy Director of the FDA, reiterated the importance of maintaining inspections for imported food safety.
