The Tiananmen Square incident, which shocked the world on the night of June 3 and early June 4, 1989, marks its 36th anniversary this year. The Chinese authorities consider terms related to the 'June 4th' event as taboo and will quickly delete any related content found online. People discussing the incident may also face scrutiny.

On this occasion, the Mainland Affairs Council of the Executive Yuan issued a statement urging the Beijing authorities to uphold basic human rights, promote democratic reform, and grant more significant historical meaning to the 'June 4th incident,' providing justice to the victims and their families.

The Council pointed out that while the CCP proclaims the realization of 'whole-process people's democracy' domestically, it consistently ranks at the bottom in international democracy indexes.

The Council stressed that peace is the only option, and prosperity is the goal for long-term stability. It calls on the Beijing authorities to respect the Taiwanese people's commitment to democratic freedoms and to handle political differences practically.
