Lee Jae-myung Elected as South Korean President, Vows to Overcome Internal Strife and Revive Economy

South Korea held its presidential election on June 3, with 80% of the votes counted by 1:20 AM on the 4th, where Lee Jae-myung led with a 48.37% vote share against Kim Moon-soo and Lee Jun-seok. In his victory speech early on the 4th, Lee vowed not to allow the military to threaten the citizens and promised to fully commit to reviving the economy and improving livelihoods.

Lee stated, “My primary mission entrusted to me is to overcome internal strife; I will not allow the military to use weapons entrusted by the citizens to threaten the nation.” With a final vote share of 49.42%, he officially became the 21st president of South Korea.

Born into poverty, Lee struggled in his youth but eventually obtained a scholarship to law school and became a human rights lawyer. His background resonates with the public seeking change, and he now faces the challenge of stabilizing a turbulent political environment and boosting the economy.
