Xi Jinping and Trump Discuss Taiwan Issue, Urging Caution to Avoid Conflict

Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on the evening of the 5th, emphasizing that the U.S. should objectively assess progress in their relations and lift negative measures against China. He warned that the U.S. must handle the Taiwan issue cautiously to prevent a small minority of "Taiwan independence" supporters from dragging both nations into a dangerous confrontation.
According to Xi, correcting the trajectory of U.S.-China relations requires concerted effort to steer the ship in the right direction and eliminate all forms of interference and sabotage, which is especially critical. He noted that the recent Geneva trade talks marked an important step in resolving economic issues through dialogue and received widespread support from both countries and the international community, reinforcing that dialogue and cooperation are the only correct choices.
Xi urged both sides to make good use of the established trade consultation mechanism, adopting an equal stance, respecting each other's concerns, and striving for a win-win outcome. He reiterated China's sincerity and principled approach toward honoring agreements made. After the Geneva talks, China seriously implemented the agreement, and Xi called upon the U.S. to respond with a factual perspective and to withdraw negative measures imposed on China.
Xi stressed the importance of enhancing exchanges in diplomacy, trade, military, and law enforcement to foster consensus, reduce misunderstandings, and strengthen cooperation. Trump expressed his deep respect for Xi and acknowledged the importance of U.S.-China relations, expressing support for China’s sustained economic growth.
Both sides agreed to continue working towards the implementation of the consensus reached in Geneva and to convene a new round of talks as soon as possible.
