Ryuichi Sakamoto's Documentary 'Tokyo Melody' Re-Released, Captures Family Jam Session

The documentary 'Ryuichi Sakamoto: Tokyo Melody' will be re-released on June 13 in a 4K restored version, making its debut on the big screen in Taiwan. This film, regarded as a 'time capsule', captures Ryuichi Sakamoto's creative moments during the making of his album 'Music Atlas', especially the rare footage of him jamming with his second wife, Akiko Yano, at home.

Directed by Elizabeth Lennard, the film uses 16mm film to chronicle Sakamoto's interactions with members of the YMO band and reveals how he learned to face the public eye from David Bowie. In the film, Sakamoto discusses why he chose to move to New York, escaping the pressures of Japanese society to focus on his music.

One of the most moving segments is the spontaneous jam session between Sakamoto and Yano at home, which was entirely unplanned. Lennard shares that the moment was captured when she asked if she could film Sakamoto playing, to which he replied, 'I need to ask Akiko first.' This reflects the supportive atmosphere of their home and their deep musical partnership.

The film not only focuses on Sakamoto but also illustrates the cultural pulse of Japan in the 1980s. The appearance of Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi recreates the creative spark of the legendary electronic music group at their peak. With this re-release, audiences will again witness how a young Sakamoto remained true to himself while searching for balance in his music and life.
