Turkey’s Government Encourages Childbirth Amid Declining Birth Rates by Promoting 3rd Child and Limiting C-Sections

The Galata Bridge in Istanbul is a popular wedding photo spot, yet despite Turkey's expected population of over 87 million by 2025, it faces a declining growth rate. Official data shows that the fertility rate dropped from 2.38 in 2001 to a projected 1.48 in 2025, lower than that of the US and UK. President Erdoğan views this decline as a 'serious threat' and has decided to take action.

After declaring 2025 as the 'Family Year,' Erdoğan announced that 2026 will mark the start of a 'Family Decade,' offering interest-free loans to newlyweds and a monthly subsidy of 5,000 lira (equivalent to over 3,800 NTD) to women giving birth to a third child. Erdoğan has also blamed women and the LGBTQ+ community for the declining birth rate, which has stirred controversy among youth.

Economic issues in Turkey, including high inflation and unemployment, play a crucial role in women's decisions against childbirth. According to official figures, the unemployment rate for Q1 2025 is projected at 8.2%, with youth unemployment reaching 15%. Additionally, the government has prohibited private hospitals from conducting C-sections without medical reasons, aiming to reduce the rate to 20%. Critics argue that such measures treat women as 'breeding tools,' calling for prioritization of addressing domestic violence against women.
