Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia Strengthen Naval Capabilities to Counter Russia

In response to Russia's expansionist ambitions in the Baltic Sea, Poland and neighboring Baltic countries have announced plans to enhance their submarine and surface ship capabilities, reinforcing maritime power and demonstrating their determination to deter Russian aggression.

According to the military news website 'Army Recognition,' the Polish government has launched the 'Orka' program, planning to procure 3 to 4 new submarines by the end of the year to replace the aging Soviet-made Kilo-class submarine 'ORP Orzeł.' The new submarines will feature Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems and the capability to launch cruise missiles.

Major shipbuilding companies, including Babcock (UK), Naval Group (France), TKMS (Germany), and Fincantieri (Italy), are all competing for this order.

Meanwhile, Lithuania and Latvia are partnering with Finland's Marine Alutech Oy Ab to kick off the 'Future Common Multipurpose Attack Craft' (CFMAC) program, which will procure advanced 'Spike NLOS' missile launchers and remote weapon stations on fast attack boats 'Watercat M18' to enhance coastal defense and maritime patrol capabilities.

These efforts by the countries aim to bolster their asymmetric warfare capabilities and counter Russian aggressive intentions, while also improving interoperability with NATO and enhancing situational awareness in the region to safeguard the northeastern flank and Baltic security.
