Tainan's Mangoes and Guavas Successfully Enter EU Market

Tainan's mangoes and guavas have successfully made their way into the EU market, with the city government collaborating with the central authorities to boost agricultural exports. Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture announced that the EU has officially opened its market to Taiwanese mangoes and guavas, overcoming quarantine challenges associated with fruit flies and creating new trade pathways.
Mayor Huang Wei-che shared insights into the secret behind entering the European market and thanked the central agencies and the quarantine inspection department for their proactive coordination. He recalled that the city government has long been committed to promoting agricultural marketing abroad, recalling a promotional event held in the Netherlands last September, where only samples were brought, but they faced obstacles due to EU quarantine restrictions.
To address the quarantine issues, the city government promptly contacted the Ministry of Agriculture to arrange coordination with the Netherlands' plant protection agency (NVMa), clarifying import quarantine concerns. They successfully provided documentation showcasing Taiwan's systematic pest and disease management, including mango steam treatment and guava cold storage quarantine, eventually gaining the EU's trust.
The city government has been working long-term with the Ministry of Agriculture to enhance agricultural product quarantine techniques. For instance, the Yujin steam treatment plant completed equipment updates last year, maintaining a national leading position in steam treatment and effectively preventing the Oriental fruit fly, thus enhancing the quarantine pass rate of export agricultural products. Additionally, Tainan's guavas have been successfully exported to the United States since 2019 through cold treatment technology, becoming the first source of guavas exported to the U.S., and this recent entry into the EU market will undoubtedly benefit farmers.
The city government stated that Tainan has actively participated in international food exhibitions in Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore, exploring diverse export markets. The agricultural technology innovation is continually pursued, as seen in the recently concluded 9th Asia-Pacific Agricultural Technology Exhibition and Conference, which provided more opportunities for Tainan's agricultural technology and quality products to shine on the international stage while enhancing exchanges with other countries.
The city government will continue collaborating with the central government to improve on-site quarantine capabilities and export competitiveness, assisting farmers in stabilizing their incomes. This successful entry into the EU market demonstrates the international quality of Taiwanese agricultural products and sets the stage for further access to high-end markets in the future.
