Hong Kong's Social Democratic Alliance Announces Dissolution Ahead of July 1, Once the Third Largest Pro-Democracy Party

The Social Democratic Alliance (SDA) in Hong Kong held a press conference today announcing its formal dissolution. Chairperson Chan Po-ying stated that facing immense political pressure, the decision to dissolve was a "reluctant choice," expressing deep concerns for the safety of its members and supporters. Founded 19 years ago, the SDA was once the third largest party within Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement, but has faced increasing challenges in recent years, leading to this decision.

During the conference, Chan held a red rose as a symbol of human dignity, emphasizing the alliance's efforts to maintain its voice despite various adversities in recent years. She reiterated that the decision to dissolve was unanimously agreed upon internally but did not disclose specific reasons. Vice-Chairs Chow Ka-fai and Yu Wai-bun were also present, criticizing the government's oppression of society and the shrinking space for pro-democracy voices. Scholars pointed out that the decline of such organizations marks an example of political purging in Hong Kong.
