India's 90-degree overpass, built for 200 million rupees, sparks outrage online

A photograph of a nearly 90-degree turn overpass in India has gone viral on social media, leading to widespread criticism from users. This overpass in Madhya Pradesh was constructed at a cost of 200 million rupees over ten years, but safety concerns have led to the suspension of seven engineers. They defended their design choices, stating that limited land availability and proximity to a metro station left them with no choice but to proceed as they did.

Reports indicate that this 648-meter overpass was intended to improve traffic connections between various regions and shorten commuting time for around 300,000 people. However, the design has raised serious questions about safety. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered an investigation and announced that the engineers involved will be suspended, including two chief engineers, while the consulting firm and construction unit responsible for the design have been blacklisted.

As the controversy escalates, the Bhopal city government is considering acquiring additional land to redesign the overpass with a safer curved turn. This structure, originally seen as a significant upgrade for urban transportation, now stands as a case of oversight failure and compromise in design.
