Trump and Xi Confirm 'One China' Policy as PLA Conducts Provocative Military Exercises around Taiwan

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China conducted highly provocative military drills near Taiwan today. Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with US President Donald Trump on May 5, during which Chinese state media reported that Trump confirmed the US would continue to adhere to the 'One China' policy. Following this, the PLA dispatched aircraft and naval vessels this afternoon to conduct a 'joint combat readiness patrol.' Whether this action tests the political boundaries of the 'One China' policy mentioned by Trump remains to be observed, as military experts advise caution against drawing conclusions from a single exercise.
The Ministry of National Defense stated that since 3:45 PM today, the military detected 21 aircraft and drones, including J-16s and KJ-500s, operating in maritime activities. Of these, 15 crossed the median line into Taiwanese airspace in the north, central, and southwest. They conducted what is termed 'joint combat readiness patrol,' effectively harassing the surrounding air and sea areas.
Regarding the proximity of Chinese naval vessels to Taiwan's 24-nautical-mile contiguous zone, the Ministry stressed that the Taiwanese military is closely monitoring the situation using joint intelligence and reconnaissance methods. Additionally, they deployed task-specific aircraft, ships, and coastal missile systems to respond appropriately. The Ministry emphasized that these actions are highly provocative, showing disregard for the maritime rights of other nations, and pose threats to regional stability while openly undermining the status quo.
