Su Jun-bin Challenges Peng Qi-min: A Data Analysis on Taiwan's Air Quality

Deputy Mayor of Taoyuan City Su Jun-bin strongly rebuts Environmental Minister Peng Qi-min's claims, criticizing him for using incomplete data to justify the impacts of air pollution. Su points out that Peng's assertion that “Taiwan's air quality is second only to Japan” is based on outdated data comparisons that do not reflect the current situation.
Su asserts that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) relies on an average of data from only 31 monitoring stations, and the PM2.5 figure cited by Peng is merely an isolated indicator lacking comprehensive comparisons with other countries. He emphasizes that such an approach misleads the public and overlooks the long-term effects of thermal power generation on the environment.
Furthermore, he notes that emissions from thermal power plants are significantly high, with sulfur oxides accounting for 40.4% of all emissions, which results in the entire population bearing these environmental costs. Su calls for the EPA to provide more complete information to help the public understand the actual environmental risks.
Additionally, he responds to the term “lung power generation,” stating that the environmental costs of thermal power generation should be transparently disclosed so that the public knows the real price of using such electricity.
