Trump to Attend Next Month's G7 Summit in Canada

The White House confirmed on the 22nd that President Trump will attend the G7 leaders' summit scheduled for June 15-17 in Canada. This summit has drawn significant attention due to Trump's recent call for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States, highlighting the strained relations between the two countries.

Trump has repeatedly urged Canada to join the U.S. while imposing tariffs on Canadian goods, further escalating tensions. Canada's new Prime Minister, Carney, who took office in March, stated candidly during a visit to the White House in early May that Canada is 'not for sale,' to which Trump replied, 'never say never.' Nonetheless, both leaders praised the progress made following their meeting.

Additionally, Japanese Prime Minister Shibakubo plans to meet with Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit. The G7 finance ministers and central bank governors held a preliminary meeting in Canada from the 20th to 22nd, issuing a joint statement agreeing to continue working together to address global challenges, condemning Russia for its brutal war against Ukraine, and reiterating that Russian sovereign assets will remain frozen until the war ends, insisting that Russia must pay for the damage caused to Ukraine.
