Strengthening of CCP's Influence Over Taiwan: Qiu Chui-zheng Calls for Adjustment of Hong Kong and Macau Residency System to Include 'Long-Term Residency'

The head of the Mainland Affairs Council, Qiu Chui-zheng, stated today that the rapid changes in cross-strait and Hong Kong-Macau situations have seen the CCP increasing its infiltration and united front efforts toward Taiwan while also deepening its control over Hong Kong and Macau, resulting in demographic shifts in Hong Kong due to immigration from mainland China. To safeguard freedom, democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and a common home, the government must review and adjust the existing residency system for Hong Kong and Macau residents.

The new system will introduce a 'long-term residency' provision, moderately extend the observation period, and balance residency requirements across various categories of individuals. Qiu stressed the importance the government places on every new resident willing to develop in Taiwan. He attended the '2025 Hong Kong Residents' Suitable Life Seminar' in Tamsui to hear opinions from Hong Kong residents and explain residency policies, engaging with about 30 attendees who actively participated.

From 2019 to March of this year, over 56,000 Hong Kong and Macau residents have been approved to stay in Taiwan, with a settlement approval rate exceeding 75% for those meeting certain conditions. Qiu emphasized the government’s commitment to assisting those from Hong Kong and Macau who wish to stay in Taiwan, and the new system will also enhance the safety of Taiwanese society.
