EU Parliament Delegation and Guam Governor Visit Taiwan

The Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that a delegation from the European Parliament, including members Reinis Pozņaks and Beatrice Timgren, along with policy advisor Jens Vornøe, will visit Taiwan from May 25 to 30. During their visit, the delegation will meet with Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, and engage in discussions with the Legislative Yuan, relevant ministries, and civic organizations on topics such as Taiwan-EU relations, regional security, and economic cooperation.
At the same time, Guam Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero will also visit Taiwan from May 25 to 31. Previously, in December last year, she hosted President Lai's transit visit with high honors. During her visit to Taiwan, she will again meet with President Lai and Minister Wu.
According to information from the Presidential Office, President Lai is scheduled to meet with both the European Parliament delegation and Governor Guerrero on May 27. Guam holds significant military importance as a U.S. Pacific territory with 9,700 U.S. troops stationed and various military facilities. It is analyzed that Guam will undoubtedly play a critical role if Beijing takes any military action against Taiwan. Despite the absence of a military treaty or formal diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Taiwan, Washington is expected to respond to any Chinese aggression and use Guam as a staging ground for many such actions.
Since World War II, Guam has been an important military outpost for the U.S., primarily consisting of Andersen Air Force Base and numerous military facilities. Approximately 30% of Guam's territory is occupied by U.S. military installations.
