Giant Mural 'Peace Kinmen Island' from Kinmen Elementary School to Exhibit at Nagasaki's 80th Atomic Bomb Anniversary

Giant Mural 'Peace Kinmen Island' from Kinmen Elementary School to Exhibit at Nagasaki's 80th Atomic Bomb Anniversary

The giant mural 'Peace Kinmen Island' created by students of Kinmen Elementary School took three months to complete, measuring 3.5 meters high and 7.8 meters wide. It will participate in the international children's peace mural exhibition titled 'Praying for Peace: Children's Guernica of Nagasaki' in Nagasaki, Japan, this August.

During the 'handprint' ceremony today, twelve fifth-grade students left their black handprints on the canvas as a symbol of their commitment to a peaceful future. Principal Zhang Zhimeng stated that this artwork is inspired by Picasso's anti-war mural and incorporates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reflecting students' thoughts on peace and education.

In their creative process, students explored the history of World War II and the Nagasaki atomic bombing, interviewing elders to gather oral histories. The mural depicts shadows of war while illustrating a desire to escape conflict, with 'doves of love' symbolizing peace soaring through the artwork. This piece represents not just an artistic endeavor but also students' understanding and reinterpretation of history.
