Italian Nun Zhao Mum Passes Away at 93 After 60 Years of Service to Taiwan

Italian nun, Zhao Xiurong (known as Zhao Mum), passed away today (5/30) at 3 PM, at the age of 93, after dedicating over 60 years of her life to serving in Taiwan. She worked primarily in the mountainous areas of Hsinchu County, where she was affectionately known by the local Indigenous people.

Hsinchu Mayor Cheng Chao-fang expressed his condolences on Facebook, referring to Zhao Mum as Taiwan's Mother Teresa, whose love kept the mountains warm. In times of scarcity, she became a beacon of hope for countless Indigenous children.

Recalling their time together, Mayor Cheng mentioned their annual tradition of bringing warmth to children on Children's Day. Zhao Mum's last appearance was at a recent Mother's Day celebration attended by many of the students and parishioners she had helped.

She became suddenly weak and unable to eat, ultimately passing away peacefully at the Sacred Heart Sisters' Provincial House.
