Veteran Hong Kong Actor Fang Gang Passes Away at 78

Fang Gang, a veteran actor from Hong Kong (also known as Leung Fong Kong), passed away in the early morning of May 30 at the age of 78. The news was shared by his stepson, Wang Hanzhang, on social media, but the specific cause of death has not been disclosed.
Fang, originally named Leung Shun Nian, was born into a wealthy family. His father operated a nightclub in Causeway Bay during the 1960s, allowing Fang to be exposed to the entertainment industry from a young age, meeting stars like Lam Siu Ling and Cheung Chung Man. In 1968, he joined the acting training program at Cathay Film Company and debuted alongside actors like Lau Dan and Lee Si Kei. Fang rose to fame in Southeast Asia in 1986 with his role in the stage play “The Heart of the Matter”, based on a Broadway classic. He later starred in the drama “On the Edge” with actors like Leon Lai and Louis Koo, successfully portraying the villain Zheng Sai Fung, earning the nickname “The Go-To Villain.”
Fang was later recruited by ATV for a hefty salary and appeared in several hit series, including “The King of Winners II” and “The Rich and Famous.” He also starred in the film “The Ghost of My Bro” alongside Stephen Chow and other notable actors, playing a villain in the story. His other notable works include “The Rich and Famous,” “Silver Fox,” and “Miracle.”
In 2022, Fang was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and acute heart failure, eventually relying on a wheelchair. He never married and, after stepping away from the entertainment industry, he moved to mainland China for a comfortable retirement life. He frequently shared photos of gatherings with friends on social media, with friends describing his lavish home as feeling like entering a palace.
