Chinese Man Arrested After Allegedly Drunk Driving and Hitting Four Japanese Schoolchildren

A Chinese national was arrested in Japan's Saitama Prefecture after allegedly drunk driving and hitting four schoolchildren, subsequently fleeing the scene. The incident occurred on the afternoon of the 14th during school dismissal, when 42-year-old Dong Hongpeng's SUV reportedly lost control and struck a group of students waiting to cross the street. Although he fled the scene, he turned himself in to the police on the 18th.
Dong admitted to the collision during questioning but claimed he left because the victims said it was 'okay.' An investigation indicates that he had been drinking at a restaurant prior to the incident. A friend traveling with him has also been arrested for violating traffic laws, but police have not disclosed whether he faces charges.
This incident has raised concerns about traffic safety, particularly around schools.
