Taiwan-US Zero Tariff Policy May Harm Taiwan's Agriculture, Yang Ru-Meng Strongly Opposes

In response to the US's equal tariff negotiations, President Lai Ching-te proposed a "zero tariff" between Taiwan and the United States. However, Taiwan's rice industry fears significant impacts from this proposal. Yang Ru-Meng, convenor of the 248 Agricultural Market, emphasized in the online program "Noon Connection" that zero tariffs would impose unnecessary costs on Taiwan, questioning, "Should Taiwan help US farmers financially?" He firmly stated, "We will definitely not accept zero tariffs."
Yang further indicated that if the zero tariff policy cannot be blocked, the government must consider countermeasures, especially with upcoming elections where every vote is crucial. He pointed out that if the government cannot maintain its bottom line, it must clearly communicate what the lowest acceptable threshold for Taiwan is and urged the government to take a firm stand on the regulations of import product labeling. He argued that the law on import labeling cannot be revoked, as this would impact the social legitimacy and recognition.
