Lee Jae-myung Sworn in as South Korea's President, Promotes Practical Diplomacy

Lee Jae-myung was officially sworn in as South Korea's 21st president on April 4th at the National Assembly Plaza, vowing to end division, revitalize the economy, and lead the nation out of crisis. He emphasized the implementation of "practical diplomacy" and the continuation of the U.S.-South Korea alliance and U.S.-Japan-South Korea cooperation.

Lee won the presidency with 49.42% of the vote, defeating the People Power Party candidate Kim Moon-soo and the Reform Party candidate Lee Jun-sik. Due to the impeachment of former President Yoon Seok-youl, Lee's term began immediately after the election results were announced.

In his inaugural address, Lee mentioned that the next five years would focus on addressing global protectionism and revitalizing the economy. He plans to adopt a state interest-oriented "practical diplomacy" approach while maintaining the U.S.-South Korea alliance and U.S.-Japan-South Korea relations. He also indicated a willingness to restore dialogue with North Korea and to alleviate tensions while working towards long-term denuclearization goals.

Born into a poor family, Lee's political journey is dramatic. He dropped out of school at age 12 due to family poverty and suffered a lifelong injury while working in a factory. He later devoted himself to studying, passed the judicial exam, became a human rights and labor lawyer, and subsequently entered politics, achieving success after three attempts for the presidency.
