Nuclear Power Plant Shutdown Raises Concerns Over Future Electricity Supply

Nuclear Power Plant Shutdown Raises Concerns Over Future Electricity Supply

Last night at 10 PM, anti-nuclear activists projected messages such as "Non-Nuclear Home, No Nukes TAIWAN, No Nukes ASIA" onto the Taipower building. The shutdown of the Nuclear Power Plant Three just before midnight marks Taiwan's entry into a non-nuclear era.

Residents living near the plant expressed their reluctance to part ways with their longtime "neighbor" and hope that the shutdown will not affect electricity supply. Premier Su Tseng-chang stated, "In this non-nuclear era, there is no need to worry about electricity use."

Last night around 7 PM, the No. 2 reactor began emitting white smoke, seemingly bidding farewell to the surrounding residents. The plant started a ramp-down procedure at 1 PM and completed its shutdown process by midnight, with plans to remove all nuclear fuel by the end of May. Local residents expressed concerns about future electricity supply and hoped to see the development of alternative solar power solutions.

Pingtung County Mayor Tsao Chun-mi shared mixed feelings on Facebook, stressing the importance of enhancing nuclear safety mechanisms. Premier Su also mentioned that Taipower would systematically inform the public about subsequent energy measures, assuring that there is no need for concern regarding electricity supply.
