Heavy Rain Disrupts Roads! Hualien's Xiulin Township to Halt Classes and Work Tomorrow, 5/19

In Hualien's mountainous area, heavy rain fell on the afternoon of the 18th, disrupting the electric train lines between Hualien and He仁 to Chong德 on the North Suhua line. Due to flooding, the tracks were submerged, causing a complete shutdown of services. The Taitung 477 Taroko Express experienced a power outage and was stuck in a tunnel, affecting at least 500 passengers who have now safely returned to Hualien Station. The Hualien County government announced this evening that classes and work in the Peace Village of Xiulin Township will be suspended tomorrow.
A stranded passenger reported, "The 477 train is currently stuck in a cave, tilted and without power." The train lost power inside the tunnel, leaving passengers without air conditioning or lighting, forced to wait for assistance. Taiwan Railways dispatched a rescue train to pull the affected train back. Large crowds gathered at the station, with travelers confused about why the North Suhua train had stopped suddenly. To reach their destinations in a timely manner, some opted to transfer to the South Suhua line. Due to heavy rainfall earlier on Sunday, flooding occurred, burying the tracks between Chong德 and He仁, leading to a traffic standstill. The Taiwan Railways quickly established an emergency response team, increased the frequency of South Suhua trains, and provided shuttle buses from Hualien and Yilan to Peace Village. Given the continued rainfall, repairs may take longer than expected. Additionally, at the 161.2-kilometer mark on Provincial Highway 9, landslides were reported earlier, but vehicles can still pass through with ongoing repair efforts.
