36 Years After Tiananmen: Chinese Youth Losing the Courage to Pursue Freedom

It has been 36 years since the Tiananmen Square incident of 1989, a topic that has become unmentionable in China, referred to as the 'May 35th.' The youths who sought democracy and freedom were buried under the ashes of history by the Communist Party.
Today's Chinese university students are facing challenges that are vastly different from those 30 years ago. With youth unemployment worsening year by year, they are filled with feelings of helplessness and anxiety towards life. Many choose to stay in bed all day, scrolling through their phones and solving all their basic needs within their rooms, living as carefree 'mouse people.'
