Sweden Purchases Lockheed Martin AN/TPY-4 Radar to Enhance Long-Range Surveillance Capabilities

According to the military website 'Army Recognition', Sweden has decided to purchase the new AN/TPY-4 radar from Lockheed Martin, aiming to strengthen the long-range surveillance capabilities of its armed forces. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) selected this radar system to enhance the military's situational awareness and early warning capabilities.
Lockheed Martin's press release states that the radar system will effectively address various aerial threats, including reconnaissance rotorcraft, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, as well as small drones with low radar cross-section (RCS), and even satellites in low Earth orbit. Sweden becomes the third country to adopt this system after the United States and Norway.
Lockheed Martin expects to deliver the first batch of radars in 2027, but the specific amount and quantity of the purchase have not been disclosed. The AN/TPY-4, officially referred to as the 'TPY-4 Next-Generation Ground-Based Air Surveillance Radar', features a new generation of Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology, providing excellent sensing capabilities. It is capable of 555 kilometers of 360-degree scanning and allows for rapid installation and deployment via various transport methods.
