Former President Tsai Ing-wen Engages with Young U.S. Leaders, Aiming to be Taiwan's Partner

Former President Tsai Ing-wen participated today (6th) in a young leaders training camp organized by the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), marking the first such event held in Taiwan this year. Tsai noted on social media that some participants have experience working with the U.S. Congress, Department of Defense, and the United Nations, including retired U.S. military officers and individuals from key think tanks.
She welcomed these young leaders to Taiwan and encouraged them to engage with locals, experiencing Taiwan's democracy through sincere interactions. Tsai mentioned that during a recent visit to London, she highlighted that we are living in an era of uncertainty and unpredictability, and democratic nations should strive to build the largest consensus and collective strength to counter authoritarian expansion.
She emphasized that in Taiwan, public participation is the true foundation of democracy. Taiwan has a vibrant civil society that significantly influences public policy development. Despite perceptions of conservatism in Taiwanese society, Tsai noted that advancements such as marriage equality have emerged due to proactive civil engagement leading value discussions. Tsai asserted that Taiwan is a resilient democracy, having endured the pain of authoritarianism, which has instilled a strong commitment to safeguard the hard-won freedoms through courage and cooperation.
Moreover, she reiterated that while democracy is not a perfect system—similar challenges exist in the U.S., Taiwan, and worldwide—it remains the best framework for safeguarding human rights, promoting peace, and ensuring that every voice is heard. Tsai expressed hope that these young individuals will gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan during their stay and thanked FAPA for its continuous efforts to advocate for Taiwan's democracy and human rights in the U.S., hoping they will become dependable friends and partners in critical times ahead.
