EU Launches PROACTIF Drone Defense Mechanism to Enhance Infrastructure Resilience

Finnish network equipment manufacturer Nokia has announced a partnership with over 42 companies to develop a drone defense mechanism named PROACTIF, aimed at enhancing the operational resilience of infrastructure in Europe. This initiative is clearly influenced by the ongoing situation in the Ukraine-Russia war and the rising threat of drone-led automated attacks.
The drone defense mechanism is funded by the EU's Chips Joint Undertaking, intended to improve operational stability of the continent's infrastructure while promoting the development of the drone and robotics industries. By 2035, it is expected to generate around €90 million in revenue and create 50 application products along with 15 new industry technology patents, enhancing Europe’s significance and leadership in these markets.
Nokia will lead the development of this mechanism, collaborating with 42 tech companies from 13 countries, including prominent firms such as NVIDIA, Safran, Leonardo, and Saab. The initial goal of the mechanism is to ensure the safety of civilian infrastructure, but it may also be adapted for defense purposes in light of the strategic importance of power grids, power plants, railways, and ports during wartime.
