Han Kuo-yu Warns: A Successful Recall Vote Could Endanger Taiwan's Democracy

Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu spoke today (7th) at a rally supporting KMT legislator Hung Meng-kai, who faces a recall crisis. Han stated that this recall movement is purely a political struggle, questioning, "How can a legislator be recalled just one year into office?" He further emphasized, "If the recall is successful, Taiwan's democracy would be in jeopardy; it would be a farce of democracy in Taiwan."

Han pointed out that the exercise of recall power should target corrupt and underperforming representatives. He described legislators as holding three metaphorical knives: the questioning knife, the budget review knife, and the legislative review knife. He noted that Hung Meng-kai not only articulates his inquiries effectively but also diligently scrutinizes the budgets of state-owned enterprises and public agencies while ensuring administrative bodies abide by the law. His utilization of these tools should garner public support, yet he now faces a recall.

Han mentioned that each time he hears the DPP exclaim, "The large recall is a great success," he notices the delight among all DPP legislators, while he feels constrained to remain mute at the podium, thinking to himself, "Should such excellent legislators really be subjected to this?" He believes that if the large recall succeeds, Taiwan's democracy would effectively be flattened. After decades of hard work, the goal is to hand down a nation that is increasingly progressive and prosperous, not to have the promising sprouts cut down.

Han passionately expressed that after 40 to 50 years of striving for democracy in Taiwan, witnessing a situation where subpar representatives drive out the capable ones makes one question, "What are we really pursuing?" He also stated that when hosting foreign legislators in the Legislative Yuan, he takes pride in introducing Taiwan's democracy to them, stating, "Taiwan's democracy is not an easy feat—it has taken years of bloodshed, tears, and sweat to establish. In front of foreigners, I proudly present Taiwan's democracy, yet seeing our capable legislators facing recall is not what we desire."
