Controversy Revives Over Jiang Yaqi's Appointment to the UK as Liu Jingyi Questions Her Educational Background

The Presidential Office issued an order on May 19, not only appointing former legislator Lin Chang-zuo as ambassador to Finland, but also sending Jiang Yaqi to the UK as a diplomat. This once again raised concerns due to her previous exposure of having a 'fake degree.' Liu Jingyi, the head of National Taiwan University’s Graduate Institute of National Development, posted on Facebook stating that the legal academic committee had unanimously passed a recommendation for sanctions against Jiang, questioning her, 'Do you not even know where you studied?'

Liu pointed out that if Jiang truly feels wronged, why ask the media to 'change her title'? The Taiwan People’s Party released a statement accusing Jiang of claiming to hold a doctorate from the 'Durham University School of Social Sciences and Health' in the UK, yet her highest educational attainment was repeatedly listed as 'Law School.' The statement mentioned that the academic ethics review committee voted on whether her qualifications were 'fabricated,' but did not reach the legal threshold of a two-thirds majority and therefore did not constitute a violation of academic ethics, though there were still lapses in inaccurately listing 'Law School.'

Liu recounted the situation, stating that as the convenor of the legal field, she faced no avoidance concerning academic ethics and moral and legal matters, and members of the investigation team could testify. Regarding the potential political retaliation she might face, Liu noted, 'I have largely envisioned the situation, of course, political retaliation is already occurring in front of everyone, isn’t it?' Liu also raised questions, stating, 'If one feels unjustly treated, one should persistently stick to their truth without changing a word and should publicly disclose the previously hidden academic ethics case and cry for justice everywhere. Many media friends should recall the requests to modify the titles in the early days.'

Liu concluded with criticism, 'Is there really someone who does not know what department their degree is from? Why has the name of the degree been written incorrectly for over ten years? Moreover, both the Chinese and English degree names have been written incorrectly on all non-public and public documents. Furthermore, compared to the actual degree obtained, they are completely different departments and degree names. What mindset does a person like this possess, and what professional work can they undertake?'
