SOM's Jian Liang-Yu Reveals Design Challenges of Taipei Twin Towers Project

Jian Liang-Yu (left4) was invited to speak at the Taichung City Building Management Association's master lecture today, sharing his extensive experience in creating headquarters buildings and urban landmarks in over 20 cities across Asia. The Taipei Twin Towers project, led by the renowned American architectural firm SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill), is the latest iconic development in Taiwan, garnering significant market attention.

During the lecture, Jian revealed that the Taipei Twin Towers project is located in the most bustling area with the highest population movement in Taiwan. The biggest design challenge lies in the complex underground structure and pedestrian flow design. Therefore, the design incorporates a two-level elevated walkway, the "Taipei Corridor," connecting to Taipei Station, alongside extensive public cultural spaces presented as a "city living room."

The project, situated at the gateway of Taipei's western district, covers a total floor area of approximately 360,000 square meters and consists of two skyscrapers. It is expected to be completed in 2028 and officially opened in 2029, integrating office, commercial, museum, hotel, and transportation hub functions to create a vibrant urban core that harmonizes functionality and aesthetics.

Jian also explored key strategies surrounding high-end residential design and sustainable practices. SOM emphasizes six core design principles: context, structural expression, functional integration, social spaces, narrative quality, and sustainability strategies.

Furthermore, SOM continues to lead global initiatives for net-zero carbon emissions and green building transformations, implementing feasible low-carbon solutions through double-skin facades and energy-efficient systems. In today's lecture, Jian shared how residential design reflects urban culture, integrates shopping styles from different cities, and incorporates the fusion of architecture and artistic aesthetics in design practice.
