Japanese Expert Emphasizes Restarting Nuclear Power as Key to Achieving Decarbonization Goals

At the DSET-hosted International Supply Chain Resilience Summit, the energy session focused on natural gas, hydrogen, and grid resilience. Daiki Harada, research director at the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), stated that Japan has legislated the restart of nuclear power construction, marking the deployment of new nuclear plants after 15 years since the Fukushima disaster. This is a crucial issue for Japan as it strives to achieve low-carbon and decarbonization long-term goals.

Harada noted that scientific studies estimate a 98% probability of Japan experiencing a larger earthquake than in 2011 over the next 30 years. This February, the Japanese government approved a basic strategy for new energy, also considering current geopolitical situations where the U.S. has become vital to Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. He called for strengthening multilateral cooperation to promote clean energy development.

The summit gathered over 550 attendees, including nearly 100 media outlets, representatives from various countries, and industry leaders. Experts and scholars from think tanks, former government officials, and international corporate leaders discussed collaboration strategies on semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), energy security, and drone supply chains. Energy experts from Taiwan, Japan, Australia, and the U.S. explored how to enhance supply chain resilience amid the challenges of climate change, rising energy demand, and escalating geopolitical tensions.
