Denmark Unveils New Air Defense Plan Integrating Advanced Missile Systems

According to military news site 'Army recognition,' the Danish Ministry of Defense announced on December 12 its latest military plan, which includes a phased acquisition and rental of three advanced air defense systems to establish a layered air defense system aimed at addressing potential Russian invasion threats.

The report indicates that Denmark aims to acquire rapidly deployable air defense weapons by 2026 and formulate a long-term plan by the end of the year, using the 'Acceleration Fund' announced in February. This plan includes renting a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) from Norway and procuring German IRIS-T SLM and VL MICA systems.

Ten manufacturers are participating in the procurement process, but Denmark has decided to utilize exclusively European-made systems to strengthen the European defense industry's capacity. The NASAMS will enhance target acquisition and command-and-control capabilities, while the IRIS-T SLM and VL MICA will be utilized for countering drones and cruise missiles.

Danish Defense Minister Porscher noted that following the decommissioning of the 'Eagle' missile in 2005, Denmark has depended on its air force and naval vessels for air defense. Given the threat from Russia, the Defense Ministry plans to re-establish air defense battalions and is set to deploy new air defense artillery starting next year.
