Immigration Agency Promotes Cultural Exchange Among New Residents with DIY Indonesian Sticky Rice Dumplings Keychain Activity

To help new residents integrate into Taiwanese society, the Immigration Agency's Northern District Office recently held a Family Education and Legal Advocacy course in Taoyuan City. As part of the event, Indonesian new resident Oan Meilian shared her journey in Taiwan and taught attendees how to make a "coconut leaf dumpling keychain," fostering cultural heritage and social integration.

The Taoyuan Service Station highlighted that the Immigration Agency provides free tablet and laptop borrowing services for new residents. Those with identification cards or residency certificates can borrow an iPad or laptop (with a router) free of charge. Each household may borrow one device for 30 days, extendable once for a total borrowing period of 60 days. Interested new residents can call the inquiry hotline for more information.

Oan Meilian, who has lived in Taiwan for over 20 years, actively learned Chinese and participated in various training courses to adapt to her new life. She currently serves as a native language instructor at local middle and elementary schools, as well as a multicultural instructor for the Immigration Agency, often invited to promote Indonesian culture. Additionally, she encourages her children to participate in mother tongue competitions, achieving accolades, and they received recognition and funding from the 7th Immigration Agency New Residents and Their Children Dream Building Program for their project titled "Sewing Clothes of My Dreams." Oan encourages new residents to actively take part in programs and activities hosted by public and private organizations to better understand Taiwanese customs and enhance their skills to integrate into Taiwanese life.

During the DIY experience, Oan noted that in Taiwan, the Dragon Boat Festival involves eating sticky rice dumplings, while in Indonesia, the Eid al-Fitr is celebrated with dumplings wrapped in coconut leaves, symbolizing self-reflection and repentance during the fasting month. To provide a deeper cultural experience, she taught participants to create mini coconut leaf dumplings in the form of keychains using ribbons instead of coconut leaves.

The Taoyuan Service Station's Director, Huang Yinggui, stated that every month, the station conducts educational and legal advocacy courses for new residents, inviting outstanding new residents to share their experiences with newcomers. This promotes family interaction and multicultural exchanges. Additionally, the Immigration Agency is currently processing applications for proof of loss of original nationality for eligible individuals from mainland China, urging qualified applicants to complete their submissions by June 30 to avoid impacting their rights.
