Miss Vietnam Involved in Fraud Scandal; Tourism Bureau Cancels Contract and Seeks New Spokesperson

To attract international tourists to Taiwan, the Tourism Bureau invites well-known personalities each year to serve as tourism spokespeople. Last year, they invited Miss Vietnam, Nguyen Thuy Tien, but this year, she has been arrested for allegedly defrauding consumers, prompting the Bureau to urgently cancel her contract in April and search for a new spokesperson.
In promotional videos, Nguyen Thuy Tien is seen smiling sweetly while exploring Sun Moon Lake and enjoying Taiwanese cuisine. She previously partnered with two influencers to launch a fruit and vegetable gummy product, claiming its fiber content was equivalent to that of a plate of vegetables. However, investigations revealed the actual fiber content was only 0.935%, leading to accusations of false advertising. Before the product was discontinued, over 135,000 boxes were sold, earning her around NT$7.91 million in commission.
The Tourism Bureau plans to find a new spokesperson through a contract worth NT$14.85 million, hoping to mitigate the impact of this negative publicity. Chen Chia-Yu, an associate professor at Shih Hsin University, suggests the Bureau implement clauses in contracts to address such negative news.
