UK Defense Strategy Highlights Importance of Peace in the Taiwan Strait, Reflects International Consensus

The UK government unveiled its "2025 National Security Strategy" on the 24th, explicitly addressing the ongoing threat of Russian aggression to the international order while firmly pledging to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait and opposing the CCP's unilateral changes to the status quo. It also announced plans to increase defense spending to counter non-traditional threats, including CCP espionage activities.
The new national security strategy underscores the significant challenges posed by geopolitical conflicts, cyber security, and technological competition. It highlights how regional conflicts and great power competition lead to rising nuclear risks and impact the international order, with Russia and China, along with their allies, attempting to gain influence in space, the Arctic, rare resources, and cyberspace.
The UK government is determined to follow NATO's lead and raise its defense budget to 5% of GDP, continually enhancing military preparedness, investing in advanced technology, and deepening collaboration with its allies. Additionally, the UK will focus on Indo-Pacific affairs and continue frameworks like the AUKUS trilateral security partnership and the UK-Japan-Italy sixth generation Global Combat Air Programme to strengthen regional peace and stability. It has made it clear that it will adhere to shared democratic values and continue to deepen diplomatic and economic ties with Taiwan while subtly urging the CCP to resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue to ease tensions in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.
On the same day, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly presented the results of the UK's review of its China policy to the House of Commons, reaffirming the commitment to deepen bilateral trade, education, and innovation relations with Taiwan. In response, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude, stating that the UK’s renewed concern highlights the international community's strong consensus on the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, with Taiwan being an essential element for security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and globally.
