Costa Rican President Chavez Accused of Corruption, Supreme Court Calls for Congress to Revoke Criminal Immunity

The Attorney General's Office of Costa Rica has accused President Chavez of coercing a telecommunications company to secure a contract from the Central American Economic Integration Bank, providing a $32,000 kickback to his friend, former image consultant Cruz. The prosecution has requested the Supreme Court to revoke the president's criminal immunity to facilitate the trial of this corruption case. On the 1st, the Supreme Court made an unprecedented decision, agreeing to the prosecution's request for Congress to revoke Chavez's criminal immunity.

The Minister of Culture, Rodriguez, involved in the case, was similarly dealt with. The opposition holds a majority in Costa Rica's Congress, and public officials convicted of corruption face a maximum of 8 years in prison. On the 2nd, Chavez held a press conference, alleging that this is a political witch hunt by the opposition to obstruct his reform agenda.

Chavez stated, "Neither the Supreme Court nor the prosecution are seeking justice; they are seeking revenge, and I take pride in inciting this revenge." Since taking office in 2022, Chavez, who comes from an academic background in economics, is prohibited from seeking re-election. There are indications that he may run in the 2026 congressional elections, where his strong populist approach currently holds an advantage in polls. Chavez is also an admirer of El Salvador's anti-gang President Bukele, having sent his Minister of Justice to inspect the controversial large gang prison in El Salvador.
