Japan's Driving License Renewal Test Laxity Raises Concerns, with Chinese Netizens Joking 'Just Need Hands to Pass'

Recently, a serious traffic accident occurred in Japan where a Chinese national, Deng Hongpeng, crashed into schoolchildren after school in Saitama Prefecture, injuring four. After fleeing for four days, he turned himself in, and police discovered he had easily obtained his Japanese driving license through the 'foreign license conversion' system. Additionally, in Mie Prefecture, a Peruvian man also drove in the wrong direction, with both incidents highlighting concerns over traffic regulations in Japan.
According to statistics from the Japanese police, about 60,000 foreigners obtained their driving licenses through this system in 2023, with the highest numbers being Vietnamese and Chinese. Many Chinese nationals have shared their experiences on social media, promoting the ease of obtaining a Japanese license, which has raised alarm among authorities. Japanese lawmakers have begun discussions on this issue, considering reforms to the system.
