Trump's Remarks Stir Attention: You Ying-lung Analyzes Taiwan's Division and Isolation

The recent article by The Economist titled "A Divided and Isolated Taiwan" has sparked widespread discussion. You Ying-lung, chairman of the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation, does not fully agree with this viewpoint, but points out that President Trump's mention of "unification" may validate the stance presented in the article. He urges citizens to seriously contemplate this issue.

In a Facebook post, he poses the question that anyone concerned with national affairs cannot ignore the remarks made by Trump following the high-level talks. At a White House press conference on May 12, Trump claimed that "full openness to China would greatly benefit unification and peace," which prompted an array of interpretations and reflections.

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) responded to inquiries, stating that Trump's comments were clearly related to US-China trade relations and that US policy towards Taiwan remains unchanged. Consequently, Trump's remarks did not evoke an active response from the White House, which is quite unusual. Interestingly, the Chinese side appeared confused by Trump's comments, with relevant representatives failing to issue standard responses.

You emphasized that while Trump's statements might be seen as diplomatic rhetoric, they also underscore the challenge Taiwan faces in avoiding becoming "a divided and isolated Taiwan." He hopes for divine assistance for Taiwan and its people, which could inspire more reflection on the current situation.
